Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award 2008

In 2008 the Alexander Graham Munro Travel Award will be presented for the best painting submitted by an artist aged under 30 to the Annual Exhibition.

This award is given by the late Alexander Graham Munro, one of Scotland's finest artists, who travelled extensively during his lifetime painting in France, Holland, Italy, Tunisia, Algiers and Morocco.

This signifcant award has enabled young artists to experience and be inspired by new cultures.

Stephanie Dees, who was fascinated with architecture, pursued her interest in Paris, Prague, Rome and Venice.

At the time when Alison McGill won, although she painted rural aerial landscapes, she had only dreamed of flying over turquoise oceans. Through the award she was able to travel to America where she flew over landscapes such as the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam and in Hawaii flew by helicopter and glider across the island of Kauai.

Recent winner Jonathan A Brown travelled to India visiting Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, south Goa and travelled north of Kerela escaping to vast expanses of untouched coastline. An exhibition of new work inspired by this visit will be held in March at the Red Barn Gallery in Cumbria, alongside work by John C Brown RSW.

Any young artist who wishes to enter for this award and who will be aged under 30 by submission date for the 2008 exhibition should send their name and address now to the RSW Secretary who will send information at the appropriate time.
